WILD & JAG/GAME & HUNT :: Editor's Letter
Vol 24/11 November 2018

Oom Piet, also known as Makhomo, the Xitsonga name given to him, pioneered the art of selecting top genetics, thereby making a valuable contribution to the wildlife industry. What stands out for me is that he realised the value of hunting. He also had a definite influence on my late father, Jan van der Walt, in naming this publication GAME & HUNT, as they both knew that, had it not been for hunting, there would be no game-breeding, ecotourism or game-meat industry in South Africa. Turn to pages 66 and 88 to read about oom Piet’s The Ultimate Collection Auction and the spontaneous tributes and congratulatory messages he received from auction-goers, friends and colleagues.

Welgedaan(hashtag) #3!, soos hy deesdae bekend staan …

Also make sure to read the article on the Blaser Gong Challenge in our December edition! Turn to page 28 for a detailed article on the new improved Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25x50 riflescope, which also features on this month’s cover. Stefan took a closer look at the amazing new Gen 5-25x magnification model made by this world-class manufacturer. The product test proved this riflescope to be outstanding, good value for money, solid and very reliable – one of the all-time best scopes in its price range.

We also report on all the major auctions in a very busy auction closing season – Kroon Stud Game Auction (p 72), Wintershoek Back to Basics auction (p 80), Thaba Tholo Auction (p 86), the third annual Summit Wildlife Auction (p 92), and of course Piet Warren’s The Ultimate Collection Auction (p 88). And last but definitely not least, we bring you “In Conversation With” (p 82), featuring an interview with Tebogo Mogashoa, owner of Babirwa Game Ranch and president of the WRSA. Enjoy!

Game industry greetings
Hennie van der Walt
