There’s a wonderful passage in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic fable, The Little Prince, where a merchant proudly describes pills he’s invented that can quench thirst. By swallowing only one pill a week, you feel no need for anything to drink. This saves a tremendous amount of time. “Computations have been made by experts,” he says. “With these pills, you save 53 minutes in every week!” “And what do I do with those 53 minutes?” asks the little prince. “Anything you like,” replies the merchant. The little prince then reflects to himself: “As for me, if I had 53 minutes to spend as I liked, I should walk at my leisure towards a spring of fresh water.”

We live in a world that is obsessed with acceleration, making it quicker and easier – but not necessarily more satisfying – to conduct our daily lives. In this month of romance, we’re reminded that there are things that simply can’t be hurried: love is one of them.
