SA Garden
In the early nineties I saw the tiniest, most perfect lavender hedges around flower beds in a small Johannesburg courtyard garden – my very first encounter with such low lavender hedges. It takes a lot of courage, conviction, patience and pizazz to get a low, narrow lavender hedge that neat.
Over the years I have visited quite a few gardens designed by landscaper Shirley Wallington, and I discovered her love for combining the order of clipped hedges and topiaries with the wonderful disorder of mixed borders and the cottage look. In fact, with Shirley there are no limits: organic living, a touch of Alice in Wonderland, a space where the family can meet and have fun together – all these elements feature in her gardens. Read more about her own garden on page 99.
We honour another garden guru this month – Ludwig Taschner. Last year we appointed Maragert Roberts as our first Green Ambassador, an honorary position she will keep. In March we appointed Ludwig Taschner as our second Green Ambassador. Ludwig is such a South African treasure and we love him for his gentle personality, his vast knowledge, and for the fact that he has put South African roses on the map.
Enjoy our Easter issue and please continue writing your wonderful letters to me – I love your stories, notes and news!
Until next time!
